Freak Out!

freakersforblog

Hi everyone! Jessica B here. It has been so warm and humid! I just pulled a nice chilled beverage from the fridge to sip while I write, and the bottle is already drenched with condensation and sitting in a puddle on my desk. As some of you may recall from an earlier post, I’m new to the Bee and new to the area. I’m originally from the Arctic (well northern Minnesota, so just about!) This whole heat and humidity thing is totally foreign to me. (And I know I ain’t seen nothin’ yet – it’s only May! Yeesh, what is July like here?!)

Anyway, when Julie asked me to do a blog post about Freakers (i.e. stylish knit drink insulators,) I had no idea that ironically I would find myself needing one as I sit here writing about them. Now with a puddle on my desk, I understand why they were created right here in North Carolina.

In the company’s own words, “Freakers are nationally recognized as the one-size-fits-all knit koozie that functionally makes your beverage feel special. Presented in myriad of prismatic designs; the Freaker is a strong, tight knit that keeps your liquids insulated in style!” – Freaker USA (aka the “global leader of preventing moist handshakes and sweaty beverages.” – also their own words, which are really too good not to share.)

As awesome as their products are, and as desperately as I may want one to prevent these desk puddles, the real reason we wanted to highlight Freakers is because they’re locally made, and we are proud to support local companies and proud to carry their products. Freaker USA is headquartered in Wilmington, and they manufacture their Freakers in Troy, NC. How awesome is that?!

Now excuse me while I go get myself a Freaker. I have my (Viking) eye on “Thorrible.”

Romp Around This Summer!

Rompers are a hot trend, and it looks like they’ll be around for quite a while, especially here on the coast. Have you been wanting to rock a romper? It can be tricky to find the right look and fit, but our Queen Bee, Julie, has some pro tips to help you out:

“If you’re one of the girls that hasn’t jumped on the romper bandwagon yet, you’re in good company … it’s still a relatively new look for some of us. (Confession: I just tried one on for the first time a few months ago, shh don’t tell anyone!)  I love sharing what we learn in the fitting room, along with great tips we get from customers – and it would be irresponsible NOT to share!

Fitting Room Tips:

Raise your Hands for Great Style!

Can you comfortably raise your arms above your head?  Granted, you won’t do that all day long – but you don’t want to be unable to, or be visibly uncomfortable, when you do need to lift your arms.

Have a Seat and Relax!

Can you sit down and cross your legs without getting, er, uncomfortable?  Sitting down IS something you’ll want to do – say, oh, driving, dining or relaxing!  You don’t want spectators.  Well wait, yes you do – but because you rocked it and not because you couldn’t sit down.

Great Tips from Customers:

Double Take!

Love your romper look and don’t want to wait until it hits its rotation from the closet again? Add a belt and a cardigan to change it up.

Dress it Up!

Rompers can be worn from Beach to Bar.  Accessories define a look, so just change ‘em up. Wear your romper with flip flops and throw your hair in a messy bun for the beach, then swap those out for a clutch, wedges and a long necklace to rock it in the evening.”

Now go forth with confidence and rock that romper you’ve been wanting to try!

Local Fun!

We are so lucky to have such a great community here in Surf City with so many fun things to do – like going to our amazing beach! With summer approaching, we wanted to share some of our other favorite ideas for fun family activities.

Go for a bike ride together! Or go paddleboarding, or kayaking. Or go for an adventure and do something you’ve never done before. We recommend Herring’s Outdoor Sports for outdoor equipment rentals. It’s only $10 to rent a bike for 4 hours! See Bicycle and Beach rentals. Single kayaks are $30 for 1 hour, $50 for 4 hours. Double kayaks are $60 for 1 hour, $80 for 4 hours. Paddle boards are $30 for 1 hour, $50 for 4 hours. See Kayak and Paddle Board rentals.

Herring’s is a local family-run business. It started in 1962 as a bait and tackle shop and has grown as it has been passed down through the generations. We love supporting our local family businesses! (By the way, did you know that it’s National Small Business Week?) And who doesn’t love a good adventure?

Another fun idea: go for a picnic at Soundside Park and enjoy the beautiful views! It’s right next door to us, so you can stop by and grab some treats. (May we suggest: chocolate covered pretzels and bubble teas. Yum!)

These ideas would be great for Mother’s Day, if the weather is nice! Let’s hope the approaching storm decides to turn off course!
